A More Peaceful Approach to Resolution
Divorce mediation is a voluntary process where a neutral third party, known as a mediator, helps couples discuss and resolve issues related to their divorce. This includes matters such as property division, child custody and support, spousal support, and any other disputes that need resolution. The mediator facilitates open communication, promotes understanding, and guides the couple towards mutually acceptable agreements.
What to Expect in Divorce Mediation Process
Divorce mediation offers a more respectful, private, and cost-effective alternative to a courtroom battle. I provide online mediation only for clients and most sessions are held with both parties together in the same virtual room (I generally do not conduct separate private meetings, or “caucuses”). As a neutral mediator with a counseling background, my role is to guide the conversation, help you both clarify priorities, and work through decisions about property, debts, parenting plans, child support, and—when applicable—spousal maintenance in a structured, calm environment.
If you’re able to reach agreement, your decisions are put into a Mediated Settlement Agreement (MSA) or Memorandum of Understanding, which typically becomes the basis for your Final Decree of Divorce submitted to the court. Mediation allows you to maintain more control over the outcome, reduce conflict, and protect important relationships—especially when children are involved.
Benefits of Divorce Mediation
Cost-Effective: Mediation is typically less expensive than going to court.
Time-Saving: Mediation can often be completed in a shorter timeframe compared to litigation.
Confidential: The mediation process is private, and discussions remain confidential.
Control: You retain more control over the decisions affecting your lives, rather than having a judge decide.
Cooperative: Mediation fosters a cooperative environment, which can be particularly beneficial when children are involved.
Mediation Sessions
Initial Consultation: We begin with an initial consultation to understand your unique situation and explain the mediation process.
Session Scheduling: Mediation sessions are billed on an hourly basis and are typically scheduled in increments of 1, 2, or 4 hours.
Mediation Sessions: During these sessions, I will help you and your spouse communicate effectively, explore options, and work towards a fair agreement.
Agreement Drafting: Once an agreement is reached, the mediator will draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) outlining the terms of your settlement.
Finalization: You can then take the MOU to your respective attorneys for review and to finalize the legal aspects of your divorce.
